New Reunion Weekend Events Provide a Variety of Family Entertainment

To entertain the young—and young-at-heart—there are more family-friendly events at Reunion 2008 than ever before. From sports to storytelling to crafts to theater, diverse activities appeal to all ages and interests and are all hands-on, educational, and lots of fun.

The whole family is invited to inaugurate a new Georgetown tradition, the All-Class Procession from 10:00a.m.-11:00a.m. on Saturday, May 31. Alumni will march behind their class banners to a bagpipe serenade, walking up O Street through Healy Gates and across Healy Circle on their way to Gaston Hall to hear the Presidential Address. Family members are welcome to join in the march or to cheer from the sidelines.

Then, come see the world premiere of "Anansi the Story King" from 1:00p.m.-2:15p.m., an indoor-outdoor performance adapted and directed by Georgetown professor Nadine George-Graves. "As a metaphor for the African Diaspora, the legend of Anansi the spider is a fun children's story with a lot going on," George-Graves explains. "It explores how people stay connected and build history and tradition"—a perfect theme for Reunion Weekend.

Fifth-grade students from D.C. public schools have been invited to participate as storytellers, using storytelling techniques from African and Arabian legend to '80s pop culture to hip-hop. Joanna Ruf (C'08), a theater and performance studies major who acted in and assistant directed the three recent main-stage shows at Georgetown's Gonda Theater, will be stage managing the production. "'Anansi' combines many types of theater," says Ruf, "including shadow puppet and Japanese black theater. It is very movement-based, with actors repelling from the theater ceiling and giant outdoor puppets being maneuvered by a professional company—it's really a big spectacle, and a whole lot of fun for kids."

Many more programs and activities for children and families will be offered throughout Reunion Weekend. Check out the schedule of events to learn more.
